ONCE UPON A TIME ...a five year old girl sat on a windswept pebbly beach searching for emeralds and rubies. Rooting around in the damp, sandy stones for hidden treasure to add to her collection.
Dotted around our home are collections of objects chanced upon when scouring the beach on holidays. An odd selection of jars filled with flotsam and jetsam of all kinds; shells, pebbles and fragments of rounded glass – the emeralds and rubies of a 5 years old’s imagination. Found amongst bottle tops and buttons, old netting and tin cans are treasures that rekindle memories and provide creative inspiration. Eager eyes spy out the smooth and the glistening, keen hands bury through the seaweed brushing off sand and salt impatient to add it to the growing collection.
The flotsam and jetsam have their own tale; lost at sea, cast overboard they are honed by the waves and offered up by the gracious tide to find a home in our story. The sea has the authority to toss up what it will and leave us to question and discover new purpose and meaning in and through whatever we find.
This concept has formed a way of life for my family and we have found ourselves washed up on the shore. In need of grace and seeking out the glints of truth and joy. We find ourselves daily on the tideline of family life, our workplaces and friendships, with the awareness that hidden God encounters are just a breath away. Moments of worship, epiphany, honesty and laughter can be found in the smallest of places so we try to go about our day seeking out these treasures in the melay of family life.
Our desire is to create a home that encourages discovery, reveals truth and directs hearts towards Jesus. And beyond that to seek out space and time so that others too may have unexpected encounters with the One who is scanning the shoreline, ready to transform their tide tossed hearts.
So here I hope to start to document this journey, sharing our experiences to encourage and inspire you. Join me as we create a home that inspires a thankful heart, introduce family rituals that bring us together, find ways to worship at work, on the school run, outdoors and after a long day. My hope is to show you some of the ways in which we get creative when leading worship at our church and in our small group as well as in the big wide world.
Worship goes beyond singing at church.Worship is a lifestyle that gives God permission to permeate every part of our lives. I hope you will join me in some projects that try to find alternative, creative ways to bring Jesus into the centre of everyday. Ultimately I want to find lost spaces, lost time and lost things and give them a new lease of life, value and purpose.
TIME TO SHOW AND TELL...here I would like to share some practical things I have done or worship inspiration I have found. Making and creating home made worship is at the heart of Flotsam & Jetsam. This is my portfolio of projects; The lost and found things to inspire.
A guy we met 5 years ago in California who has come a long way since. His amazing new album is soaking my lounge tonight in The truth.

seeds family worship
Seeds Family Worship is a group that put bible verses to music in a really catchy way. My girls love listening to them and for once, they are ‘kids songs’ that as an adult I also can connect with and listen to without going crazy!!
MY JOURNAL ...here you have an insight into the practical, day to day outworking of our dream; the ups and downs, the good the bad. I will share ideas and thoughts which will hopefully encourage and inspire you to adopt a creative outlook on life!
I came down this morning to find Ashley had laid the table for breakfast despite leaving at 5am. Continue reading
Life has been incredibly busy of late. Sleep has been hard to come by and as for time, well, there isn’t any going spare that’s for sure! But I’m loving it. Continue reading
Bleary eyed I fumble for the alarm clock, desperately willing the hands to at least be pointing to the 12 and 6. Please, God, please… but no, only an hour has passed since I last woke. With a big sigh and trying to open my eyes as little as possible I reach for my dressing gown, discarded on the floor from my last wake up call, and stumble towards the bathroom light peeping through the crack in the half open door. So tomorrow February 14th is upon us again. A day we don’t really make much of a fuss about in this house; an exchange of cards is the most extravagant we get but, put it down to post-natal hormones (I’m even crying at the boat scene on Tangled!) I’m feeling the love this Valentines.
Happy 1 month birthday to my beautiful baby boy! It has been an eventful 31 days.
Take some time this weekend to consider this meditation. This season is all about waiting, being hopeful and expectant for the birth of Jesus. Maybe focus your mind listen to the track below and read these words to go deeper into God. Sometimes the Christmas run up is such a whirlwind of planning and preparation we fail to prepare our hearts for the One who it’s all about!
